My sister has herpes (the STD one) and my mom has hepatitis…..My other sister and I are concerned because they both kiss my little 16 month old niece on the mouth all the time. It grosses me out. Is there any way that my niece can get either of those diseases from kisses? I want to say something to my sister and mom but don’t want to hurt their feelings.

No. No STD can be transfered by kissing on the lips. When we did that topic in health class last year, our teacher made sure we knew that, because people were starting to panic.

Oral herpes can be transmitted by kissing. The virus can be transmitted even when there is no outbreak, but the risk of transmission is lower when there is no outbreak. If your sister has genital herpes, she can’t pass it to anyone else by kissing, it can only be transmitted by sexual contact.
Hep C is transmitted by blood, not by kissing.

Hepatitis C – NO, unless you have an open wound on your mouth and they have an open wound on their mouth – it requires their blood to come into conatct with your blood.
So unless you get into a fight with your relatives and both have bloody lips then kiss on the lips to make up, then it is not possible to get Hep C. Hepatitis C is not transferred through saliva or any other bodily fluids except for blood.
Herpes – I don’t think you are french kissing your relatives so I wouldn’t think that you could get herpes from that, Herpes loves nerve cells and that is how it enters the body, that is why it shows up on parts of the body with high clusters of nerve cells…lips and genitals. It needs nerve cells to replicate.
